Salpeter function

A simple theoretical expression, named after the theorist Edwin Salpeter (b. 1924), for the numbers of stars of different masses among newly formed stars per unit volume of a galaxy. The Salpeter function, also known as the initial mass function, is proportional to M -2.35 where M is the mass of a star.
